This month's series is unlike anything we've done before. Over twelve episodes, we'll be walking through the most formative lessons I've learned over my fifty-plus years in ministry – and the stories of the mentors who planted them. Some of these were long, close relationships. Others were people whose teaching landed so deeply it never left, even without much personal contact. Join me throughout the month of July as we dive into these powerful lessons – you won't want to miss an episode!
Last on the list — and a fitting one to finish with — is Pastor Tommy Barnett. The man who built Phoenix First Assembly into one of the great soul-winning churches in America, and then turned an abandoned hospital in Los Angeles into the Dream Center. What he carried was contagious. You got around him and you wanted to find somebody and bring them to Jesus. He taught me that the blessing God puts in your hands was never meant to stop with you — and the story of how Christmas Train got built proves it.

Eleventh on the list is Hilton Sutton — one of the most faith-filled prophecy teachers I ever encountered, and the man who taught me that biblical prophecy was never designed to produce fear or despair. You walked out of his meetings with a sense of triumph. That was not an accident. It was because he understood something a lot of prophecy teachers miss: even in the darkest chapters of Scripture, God is the one in control — and He is coming back for a glorious church, not a defeated one.

Tenth on the list is Edwin Louis Cole — a man's man, a champion for biblical manhood, and the one who preached a Sunday morning message at Church on the Move that stopped me cold. The line he landed was this: every death in Christ is followed by a glorious resurrection. It reframed every cross I had ever been called to carry — and every one I would face after that.

Ninth on the list is Dr. Roy Hicks — Foursquare leader, scholar, and one of the most balanced and gentle men of faith I ever sat across a table from. Over breakfast at IHOP on Memorial Drive in Tulsa, he asked me one question about the centurion in Matthew 8 that stopped me cold: what made his faith so great? The answer reshaped the way I understood authority, anointing, and why one can disappear the moment the other breaks down.

Eighth on the list is T.L. Osborn — one of the greatest missionary evangelists of the twentieth century, a man who preached face to face to more people than perhaps anyone in history. What I did not expect was that on a Delta flight to Salt Lake City, he would spend an hour and a half on his knees in the seat in front of me picking my brain. A man approaching seventy, with a million-person crusade to his name, asking a thirty-year-old kids minister how he staffed his ministry. The lesson was not anything he said. It was what he did.

Seventh on the list is Dr. Lester Sumrall — apostle, pastor, missionary, and in my opinion one of the sharpest business minds in the history of ministry. What he taught me in green rooms and camp meetings was something almost no one else talked about: don't take on a financial obligation that doesn't come with an income stream. That principle saved me from a $9 million mistake and guided nearly every major financial decision I ever made.

Sixth on the list is Oral Roberts — a man whose legacy was impossible to escape in Tulsa, even without a close personal relationship. What stuck with me was something he said about how he built ORU: he prayed in tongues and interpreted his prayers. That single habit, pulled straight from 1 Corinthians 14, became one of the most practically powerful tools in my own ministry — and the story of how we got our television studio is the proof.
