This month's series is unlike anything we've done before. Over twelve episodes, we'll be walking through the most formative lessons I've learned over my fifty-plus years in ministry – and the stories of the mentors who planted them. Some of these were long, close relationships. Others were people whose teaching landed so deeply it never left, even without much personal contact. Join me throughout the month of July as we dive into these powerful lessons – you won't want to miss an episode!
Eighth on the list is T.L. Osborn — one of the greatest missionary evangelists of the twentieth century, a man who preached face to face to more people than perhaps anyone in history. What I did not expect was that on a Delta flight to Salt Lake City, he would spend an hour and a half on his knees in the seat in front of me picking my brain. A man approaching seventy, with a million-person crusade to his name, asking a thirty-year-old kids minister how he staffed his ministry. The lesson was not anything he said. It was what he did.

Seventh on the list is Dr. Lester Sumrall — apostle, pastor, missionary, and in my opinion one of the sharpest business minds in the history of ministry. What he taught me in green rooms and camp meetings was something almost no one else talked about: don't take on a financial obligation that doesn't come with an income stream. That principle saved me from a $9 million mistake and guided nearly every major financial decision I ever made.

Sixth on the list is Oral Roberts — a man whose legacy was impossible to escape in Tulsa, even without a close personal relationship. What stuck with me was something he said about how he built ORU: he prayed in tongues and interpreted his prayers. That single habit, pulled straight from 1 Corinthians 14, became one of the most practically powerful tools in my own ministry — and the story of how we got our television studio is the proof.

Fifth on the list is John Osteen — pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, and one of the most genuinely low-key, unhurried men I ever sat in a room with. What I kept hearing from him, in green rooms and from the pulpit, was two words I did not always follow but never forgot: keep it simple. The lesson behind those words — that a walk with God should move by easy stages, not constant pressure — has saved me more than once and cost me when I ignored it.

Fourth on the list is Wayne Myers — a missionary I heard preach exactly once, about six weeks after moving to Tulsa in 1978. He had a five-gallon tub of corn, a teaspoon, an ice cream scoop, and a snow shovel, and by the time he was done, God had spoken to me about something that would cost me half my annual salary. The lesson he planted that night has never left: not giving to get, but living to give.

Third on the list is Kenneth Hagin — a man I never heard speak until I had already been reading his little thirty-two-page books for years. What he taught me was this: inspiration will not heal you, information will. Through his writing, I learned how to stand on the word of God, resist the devil with scripture rather than emotion, and find the stability that a roller-coaster faith life could never give me.

This episode's mentor is my uncle, Keith Johnson — the pastor who took in a newly saved teenager with no work ethic and no idea what he was getting into, and spent two years teaching him to clean toilets, haul hay, and never quit. The lesson he planted has never left: if you're going to do it, do it right, and finish what you start.

First on the list is evangelist James Robison — the man who led me to Christ on February 19, 1970, in a Baptist church in Irving, Texas, and whose fearless, unashamed confidence in the gospel set a standard I have never forgotten.
